Alf the Alligator | ||
Alf the alligator said, "What's that ringing in my head?" As he looked around to see, High up in a nearby tree, Birds were sounding like a drill, Making many holes at will. Alf said, "Stop that racket, please. Go and find some other trees." Woodpeckers are most polite, So they vanished out of sight. Alf the alligator found Peace returning all around. "Ha," he thought, "I think I'll use Thirty minutes for a snooze. But before he closed his eyes, He perceived a great surprise. Twenty monkeys, black and white, Quickly swung into his sight. How they chattered as they sang, Dropping peels without a pang. Peels of mangos, guavas too, And bananas they then threw. Alf the alligator said, "I don't like them on my head. Find another place to stash All your peels and other trash." "Sorry," said the monkey king, "It was such a stupid thing. Now we know that you are there We will take much greater care." Alf decided peels to taste, So they would not go to waste. "Mmm," he said, "They're not too bad. Actually the best I've had." So he ate them, one by one, Till the lot was fully done. Alf the alligator thought, "How I wish a fish I caught. That would be a tasty treat. It would make my meal complete." Down into the pond he slid, With his body almost hid. When his mighty jaws he snapped, Seven fish were all entrapped. Then Alf ate them, bones and all, Even one that was quite small. When the fishy meal as done, Alf set off in search of fun. He found Cub Scouts on the trail, Catching critters in a pail. It was quite a good-sized pack, Moving down the woodsy track. It was like a pleasant dream Till they saw a rushing stream. Not too deep, I'm glad to say, But it blocked the Cub Scouts' way. Alf gave out a happy yelp. "Don't despair, Cubs, I can help." Then he lay across the stream, Sturdy as a wooden beam. One by one the Cubs could file' 'Cross his back in Injun style. They were glad their feet wee dry So they told Alf, "Thanks, goodbye." "You are welcome, it was fun. You are lightweights, every one." Then Alf spied a little girl, Running off, her skirt a-whirl, Toward a boa, giant snake, That could all her body break. Quick as lightning Alfie sped To the girl and then he said, "Never fear, my little lass, Nothing bad will come to pass." Then he snapped his jaws in play And the boa fled away. Though the gator gave her aid She was still a bit afraid. "I won't hurt you," Alfie said. "You have nothing more to dread. Alligators can be kind, If they only have a mind. I am Alfred, who are you?" She replied, "My name is Sue. Thanks for scaring off the snake; Now my feet no longer quake. Whey don't you come home with me? You can meet my family? Alf the alligator said, "Fine, just ride upon my head." Susie's folks at first were scared, But when all was said and aired They just welcomed Alfred in, And he gave a toothsome grin. He said, "Well, I cannot stay, But I'll come another day." | ||
