Mr. Owl | ||
Christopher, Andrew, and Timothy, too, Went for a walk just for something to do. While they were strolling they spotted an owl Up on a tree limb and wearing a scowl. "Say, Mr. Owl, are you angry with us? We have been quiet. We're making no fuss." Owl blinked his eyes as he sadly expressed: "I am just angry that I get no rest. Sun is so bright and I don't have a hole. Sometimes I wish I could burrow like mole." "Well," said the boys, "we know just what to do. Come to your house and your troubles are through." Owl said "Okay, I will tag right along. Find me a place where I feel I belong." When they got home they ascended the stair, Found a dark closet and left the owl there. He said "It's great," as they fastened the door. "Too bad I never tried closets before." Later, when it was the following day, All of the boys had gone outside to play. Mother discerned a weird shriek up the stair. She thought it strange for her sons where not there. Upward she hastened to find out the cause. Shrieks from the closet then forced her to pause. Opening quickly the shut closet door, She found an own that was not there before. "Eek" she exclaimed, "What are you doing here?" He said "Your sons brought me, please do not fear. You will discover that I am quite nice. I can effectively catch all your mice." Mother said "Great, you can start hunting now." Owl flew so quickly that Mother said "Wow!" Down to the basement he fluttered his wings, Being quite careful of all of the things. He caught ten mice and consumed them with glee. Mother had thought that the mice were just three. "Fine," Mother said, you can stay here for free. Closets are better than any old tree. Here in Mount Holly an owl is a pet That must be one of the rarest things yet." "Well," said the owl, "I will stay for a week If there re plenty of rodents to seek." Christopher, Andrew, and Timothy, too All were so happy they almost turned blue. Father was not so elated as they! He would be happy if owl went away. "Hey, Mr. Owl," said the boys, "What's your name?" "Oscar," he said, "and I'm really not tame." Oscar had feathers of blue, gray, and white, Eyes that were black, with extremely keen sight. He slept by day and went hunting at night, Causing the mice to have panic and fright. Scared though they were, mice came out of their hole. Searching for morsels of food was their goal. Often they never had time for a bite. Oscar consumed them at once, upon sight. After a while he had cleaned out the house. He had devoured the very last mouse. Father asked Oscar, "Say, what will you do Now that the mouse meals are over and through?" "Maybe I'll find me some insects to eat. Out in the garden there might be a treat." Oscar ate all of the bugs he could find, Thanking the people for being so kind. After a while, when the bugs were all gone, Oscar said "Well, folks, it's time I moved on. "Thanks for the closet, it really was great. Now I'll return to my natural state." Christopher, Andrew, and Timothy said "Come any time you're in need of a bed." Oscar flew off with his wings flapping high As the McEachrans waved a goodbye. | ||
