Jerry Giraffe

Jerry Giraffe has a home in the zoo.
Watching the people is all he can do.
One day the guard left the lock off the door.
Jerry decided that he would explore.
Out past the elephants, tigers, and bears,
Our fine giraffe left the zoo by the stairs.
When he arrived in the center of town
He was quite lost and he started to frown.
Traffic was terrible!all of those cars!
Jerry then wished he were back behind bars.
Just then he saw an attractive young lass
On her way home from her nurs'ry school class.
"My name is Karen," she said with a smile.
"Why don't you come to my house for a while?"
"Okay," said Jerry. "I've nowhere to go.
You are a person I'm happy to know."
Karen's short legs quickly tired with the pace.
Jerry slowed down since it wasn't a race.
People all stared as the two sauntered past.
Viewers were glad that they didn't walk fast.
When they arrived at the Calvert Street house
No one was stirring, not even a mouse.
Karen called out to her parents with glee:
"Look, Mom and Dad, who I've brought home with me!"
Jerry's long neck did not fit through the door.
That made it hard Karen's home to explore.
Jerry thought best to stay out in the yard,
Although the dog there was barking quite hard.
"Stop all the noise," Karen said to the pet.
"There is no reason to be so upset.
Jerry's a friend who has come here to play.
Be a good boy, please, and don't spoil his day."
When all was silent, giraffe had his lunch.
There was some tender young grass he could munch.
After a nap he exclaimed with some pride,
"Why don't you ask all your friends to come ride?"
Mom got a ladder so all could climb on.
Giraffe and three children quite soon were all gone.
Just down the street was a cat in a tree.
She slid down Jerry's neck, then she was free.
Cat sat with children upon giraffe's back
As they continued along on their track.
All of them rode sitting up very straight.
Karen said, "Jerry, I think this is great."
There was a tree by the side of the road,
Brimming with apples about to explode.
Jerry's long neck helped him pick some with ease.
He fed the children, because they said please.
On the way home Jerry stopped for a chore,
Helping a woman who had a tall store.
She couldn't reach to clean windows up high.
Jerry said, "I'll help you, don't even try.
First he just licked them, then used a rag.
They were so clean that he started to brag.
When they got home the three kids went inside,
After they thanked the giraffe for the ride.
Jerry perceived that the visit was through,
So he went back to his usual zoo.
Maybe he'll come back to Karen's some day
When the gate's open and he wants to play.
