Joe the Elephant

All of the kids are exploring the park,
Knowing that they must be home before dark.
One of the paths that they happened to see
Featured an elephant, proud as could be.
"Hi," said the pachyderm, "My name is Joe.
When I am restless I get up and go."
"Wow," said the kids, "will you give us a ride?"
"Sure," said Joe, "climb right up here on my hide."
Off they then trotted o'er hill and o'er dale.
Joe had a vigor that never would fail.
Then they encountered an ape in a tree,
Smiling and singing while drinking his tea.
Jasper, the ape in the tree, gave a smile.
"Hey, kids," you really do travel in style!"
"Join us," they said "We have plenty of room."
Jasper hopped on, in a hat with a plume.
"Where are you going?" ape queried to Joe.
"Any direction you hanker to go."
Down beat the sun so it soon became hot.
Jasper said "I know a wonderful spot.
This is the path that I think we should take."
Soon they discovered a beautiful lake.
Joe used his trunk then to give them a squirt.
Then they were feeling a great deal more pert.
Later the children climbed back up on Joe.
Jasper said, "Buddies, I want you to know
That was refreshing but now we must fly.
I see a menacing storm in the sky."
Jasper joined kids on the elephant's back.
He started jogging along down the track.
Sadly, before he could get to the pass,
Joe cut his foot on a sharp piece of glass.
Jasper extracted the shard with great care.
Joe told him, "Thanks, you're a friend, I declare."
Thunder and lightning then cracked in the sky,
And in a twinkle nobody was dry.
Joe shook his trunk and exclaimed with a scowl,
"What we all need is a nice warm dry towel."
Jasper suggested they go to his house.
While on the way they encountered a mouse.
She was just running as fast as she could,
Trying to flee from a cat in the wood.
Joe said to mousie, "You need have no fear!
I will transport you up here on my ear."
Over at Jasper's they dried out quite well.
Then they decided to rest for a spell.
Soon they were sleeping and started to snore.
That was the clue that this poem is o'er.
