Beverly's Adventures | ||
There once was a horse who could speak very well. Her name, friend, was Beverly, that I can tell. She spoke to the boys and the girls in the town. She told them to smile and get rid of their frown. She took them exploring quite deep in the wood, And asked them to carry the lunch if they could. They soon met a tiger up high in a tree, A-snarling and growling so menacingly. The children were frightened and started to cry, But Beverly's eyes were both open and dry. She said to the tiger, "Please stop all that noise. You're frightening all these nice girls and brave boys." The tiger replied, "I'm afraid of them, too! Perhaps they will kick me before I can shoo." So Beverly said, "Just come down from that tree. We never would hurt you; we're friends, don't you see?" The tiger came down and just wagged his long tail. The children all smiled; they no longer turned pale, And soon they discovered a nest of some quail. The mother quail, startled, gave off a loud "coo." But Beverly said, "We would never hurt you." So mother quail stayed right on top of her nest. She closed both her eyes and returned to her nest. Along down the trail went our growing patrol: The children, the tiger, and horse of kind soul. Before long they came to a friendly black bear, Just passing the time swatting flies in the air. "Hello," said the bear in a kind of a song. "Where are you going? May I come along?" "Of course," said sweet Beverly, "Come if you like. We're off to see what we can find on a hike." The bear brought along some fine honey to share. The kids thought that he was a generous bear. The tiger first snarled then broke into a smile. "I haven't had such a treat in a while." So off went the tiger, the kids and the bear, Just following Beverly, walking with care. Before long they came to a river quite wide And wanted to cross to the opposite side. They spied on the shore a commodious boat, Belonging, it seemed, to a friendly white goat. When Beverly asked, the goat rowed them across So quickly they had not a moment of loss. They all thanked the goat for the wonderful ride. "You're welcome," the goat said, just brimming with pride. "Perhaps I may join you?" the goat then inquired. "Of course," said the kids, "If you aren't too tired." The tiger had never encountered a goat, Especially one with a boat that could float. The tiger asked, "Why are your coat and beard white? I think you're so strange you could give one a fright!" The goat said, "Well, that's just the way I was made. And I couldn't have stripes like you if I prayed." So Beverly told them to stop all the fuss. Said she, "Let's be happy with what God gave us." They all sang a song as they walked down the trail. They knew that the peace of the Lord would not fail. Well, then they discovered a dog that was lost, For he had forgotten which path he had crossed. He asked them to help him get out of the wood. "No problem," said Beverly, "that would be good." While heading on home the encountered a flower Of purple, the finest they'd seen in an hour. The bear stopped to pick it to give to the horse. Then everyone clapped; she deserved it of course. Before long they came to the edge of the town. The kids said goodbye with a hint of a frown. "Goodbye" said the animals, "We'll come again, Although we can't tell you precisely just when." And so they all parted to go their own way, So glad that they all enjoyed such a fine day. | ||
