Adventures

Andrew and Christopher went for a walk,
Looking for marvelous turtles that talk.
Soon they discovered a turtle quite green,
One of the cutest they ever had seen.
"Say, aren't you Susie?" young Andrew inquired.
"Yes, I sure am," she replied, sounding tired.
"I have been hunting all over the park,
Looking for eyeglasses lost in the dark.
Lacking the glasses I don't see so well.
Why don't you boys help me hunt for a spell?"
"Sure," said the boys, and they scoured the wood,
Looking as hard as they possibly could.
Andrew and Christopher looked all around
Into the bushes and over the ground.
Andrew discovered the specs in a hole
That had been made by a burrowing mole.
"Here are your glasses, as safe as can be."
"Thank you," said Susie, "at last I can see."
They said, "Come join us, we'll go for a walk.
You are so friendly; we're glad that you talk."
Ere they had gone more than 25 feet,
Whom do you think they should happen to meet?
It was a bear with a thorn in his jaw,
Too hard to pull with his clumsy big paw.
Susie said, "Let's stop and help this poor bear.
He seems in pain and such abject despair."
Andrew and Christopher pulled out the thorn
So that the bear could rejoice and not mourn.
Thankfully bear gave them all pots of honey
That he'd been saving to sell for some money.
Susie and boys thought the honey was sweet.
They were surprised by the wonderful treat.
They solved the problem of honey on face:
Bear licked it off, never leaving a trace.
Susie said, "Join us, friend bear, if you like."
That's what he did, and they went for a hike.
Just down the trail there was something to see.
It was a frightened black cat in a tree.
Bear couldn't reach her, for he was too short.
Susie came up with a clever retort:
"Christopher, climb on the back of the bear,
Andrew on top and you'll be right up there."
That's what they did, and they rescued the cat,
No longer frightened in spite of all that.
Now the glad cat came along for the walk.
She just said "meow," 'cause she couldn't talk.
Soon they discovered a snake in the path,
Menacing them with its venomous wrath.
"Grrrr," said the bear, and he cased him away.
"Thanks," said the boys, "now it's safer to play."
Soon a white rabbit hopped out of a hole.
He had been visiting down with a mole.
"Hi there," he said with a smile on his face.
"Why don't we all have a jolly good race?"
Off they all sped to a house in the wood.
Andrew and Christopher ran as they could.
Bear carried Susie, who ran very slow.
Rabbit and cat ran much faster, you know.
Rabbit hopped over the logs on the trail,
Slithered 'neath briers that made others pale.
When the great foot race was over and done,
No one could doubt it: the rabbit had won.
What do you think was his marvelous prize?
Three chocolate cakes and two lemon cream pies.
Being a rabbit who knew how to care,
He shared the goodies in pieces quite fair.
So, as this poem at last has its end,
Everyone cheered, 'cause they'd found a new friend.
