Limpy the Elephant | ||
Andrew and Christopher went for a stroll. Not far from home they fell down in a hole. Luckily they didn't break any bones; They fell on leaves and avoided the stones. Andrew was frightened and started to cry. Christopher said "Help will come by and by." After a spell a small ant said "hello! I may be small but I think that I know Just how to help you get out of this pit. I'll climb on out and be back in a bit." As the boys watched he soon crawled out of sight, Onward and upward right out in the light. After what seemed like a very long spell, What should appear at the end of the well? And had brought back a big elephant friend, One upon whom he could always depend. Elephant lowered his trunk like a tree, Out climbed the boys; in a jiff they were free. "Thank you, kind elephant, what is your name?" "I am called limpy because I am lame. One leg is shorter than all of the rest. Walking for me is a very great test." "Well," said the boys, "We can help you with that. We'll cut a slice from a tree that is flat." They smoothed it nicely and when they were through Elephant had for his short leg a shoe. "Thank you so much," he exclaimed with delight. "With this fine shoe I can now walk all right. My name will henceforth be Limpy no more. Just call me Happy as I was before." "You are our friend," said the boys with a smile. May we ride up on your back for a while?" "Surely," said Happy, "Just climb up my trunk." Up the boys scampered and sat with a clunk. Happy then took them through village and farm, Vowing to keep them quite safe from all harm. When they got home, Happy bid them goodbye. Andrew and Christopher started to cry. Happy said "Sorry, I really must go. I'm much too big for your house, don't you know?" | ||
