Susie the Turtle

Susie the Turtle was restless one day
So the boys took her outside just to play.
First Susie dug a big hole in the sand.
Then it went deeper than she'd ever planned.
Under the fence her fine tunnel did go.
Andrew and Christopher followed in tow.
When they came out they all saw a mean dog
So they all hunkered behind a huge log.
That didn't work. With his keen sense of smell
Soon the great mastiff their presence could tell.
Susie then broke out in beautiful song,
Causing that dog to abandon all wrong.
Onward they strolled in the heart of the wood,
Turtle and boys were both feeling quite good.
Out in a clearing it started to rain,
Causing the boys to lament and complain.
Susie just huddled inside her dry shell.
As an umbrella it worked very well.
Sunshine soon banished the dark overcast,
Letting the soggy boys dry their clothes fast.
They had been going so long on their feet
They were both famished for something to eat.
Susie the turtle said, "Boys, never fear.
I know a berry patch right over here."
Sure enough they found a raspberry field.
Then they partook of its succulent yield.
Walking some more they soon came to a lake,
Somewhat perplexed on what course they should take.
Susie swam out round the bend out of sight,
Then she returned with a dinghy of white.
"Hop in," she said, "I will tow you across."
"Great," said the boys, "Then we'll have time to floss."
Cleaning their teeth as they rode cross the lake
They were uncertain which inlet to take.
Then a giraffe peeked around a large tree.
"This is the way," he said, "Just follow me."
Climbing ashore they all took his advice.
They were so pleased that their guide was so nice.
Since he was taller than most of the trees
He could survey all the lands and the seas.
"Welcome, my friends," he said, "Climb on my back.
I am quite friendly and my name is Jack."
Andrew and Christopher helped Susie on,
Then in a wink they were moving and gone.
"Wow," they said, "This is a marvelous view.
It is a pleasure to share it with you."
Jack took them swiftly right back to the town.
When they got home it was time to get down.
Mother and father had eyes open wide.
They never went on that wild of a ride.
They welcomed Susie and Jack with a smile,
Urging them both to remain for a while.
"No," they said, "We must go back to the wood.
Andrew and Christopher!take care!be good."
