Susie the Turtle | ||
Andrew and Christopher went for a stroll, Carrying with them a long fishing pole. When they arrived at the edge of the lake They had a snack of some cookies and cake. Putting some crumbs on their hook as a bait, They cast it out and sat down for a wait. First off they reeled in a turtle of green, Which was the strangest they ever had seen. This turtle sang and made all sorts of noise, Truly amazing the two startled boys. Quickly they pulled out the hook from her tongue, Thanking her for the sweet songs she had sung. "Susie's my name," she announced with a grin. "I'll be your buddy through thick or through thin." Susie's hard shell was a pretty sea green. Her friendly smile was the nicest they'd seen. Seeing their pole she detected their wish And took them down to the best spot to fish. Andrew caught seven and Christopher ten, Reeling the fish in again and again. Then they all headed back home on the trail. Christopher carried the fish in a pail. Andrew could carry the pole very well. Susie came last, with her house in a shell. Turtles are thought to be terribly slow, But their kind Susie had get-up and go. She left the boys and sped on down the trail, Coming back breathless and looking quite pale. "Turn back," she shouted, "there's danger ahead. I saw a tiger that filled me with dread. He was ferocious, with menacing roar. Though he had eaten, he hungered for more." Quickly the boys doubled back on their trail, Finding an alternate way to get back. Then they came up to a river quite wide. How could they cross to the opposite side? Susie swam out and returned with a raft. It was a rustic but seaworthy craft. On hopped the boys with their pole and their pail, Knowing that Susie their friend would not fail. She pushed the raft all across with great ease Ere the two lads had found time to say please. Susie sang songs all the way back to town, Cheering the boys like a gay circus clown. "Why do you sing when it's raining?" they said. "Is it because your house covers your head?" Susie replied with a shake of her tail, "That's not the reason my song will not fail. I am just happy that God cares for me, Keeping me healthy and keeping me free." When they got home with their big pail of fish Andrew and Christopher uttered a wish: "Susie, please stay in our house as our friend?" "Okay," said she, "I will stay to the end." How they enjoyed their amazing new pet. She was the best that the boys had found yet. | ||
