Red Ed | ||
Andrew and Christopher went for a walk, Searching around for a duck that could talk. Many a duck swam around in the pond And in the river that flowed on beyond. Fin'ly they saw one whose feathers were red. He told them saucily, "My name is Ed." Andrew and Christopher told him their names, Then they invited Red Ed to play games. They threw a stick for the ducky to get. He swam and fetched it as quick as a jet. Then when they climbed to the op of a tree Red Ed flew up there as straight as a bee. Then Andrew climbed up on Christopher's back. Ed climbed on Andrew with nary a quack. "Say, Ed," the boys asked, "Why are you so red?" "I'm from a red egg," responded Red Ed. "Red ducks are special; they have a great charm That can protect them from wolves that would harm. "Well," said the boys, "you give it a test. Here comes a wolf that is snarling his best." Just as the wolf came to take a great bite Red Ed said "Boo" and the wolf took to flight. "Thank you," the boys said, "That really was swell. You saved us all from that wolf very well. What other tricks can you do?" they inquired. Ed said "I do quite a bit when inspired. I can fly blindfolded up on a tree. I have some radar with which I can see." "Let's see you do it!" the boys said in doubt. "Get me a blindfold" Ed said with a shout. Tying a handkerchief over his eyes They saw that he soon flew up to the prize. Ed quacked with glee from the top of the tree. How he flew up there was some mystery. "What did I tell you," he said with a quack. And in a jiffy he made his way back. Andrew and Christopher then asked Red Ed, "Say, can you lay a red egg in your bed? "No," he replied with a shake of his head. "Laying's a job for a girl duck instead. But I can prove that my mind is quite able. I know the alphabet and the times table." These he recited quite loudly and well, Then he flew off at the sound of a bell. "Bye, Red Ed," chorused the boys with a smile. "Hope we will see you again in a while." Once they were home they both bragged of their luck To have made friends with a marvelous duck. | ||
