Jerry the Giraffe | ||
Christopher climbed to the top of the hill, Looking for dragons to give him a thrill. Up near the top he espied a giraffe Watching him walking along with his staff. "My name is Jerry," the tall mammal said. Christopher saw that his face was quite red. "Are you embarrassed or crying?" said he. "You look so very unhappy, I see." Jerry replied with a shower of tears: "I am alone though I'm only six years. Mother and Dad were both killed by a beast. It was a lion who wanted a feast." "I am so sorry," young Christopher said. "Where is your home now, and how are you fed?" "I have no home and I eat what I can. After the lion I just ran and ran." Christopher said, "Let your tears dry and end. You can rely upon me for a friend." Jerry then smiled and licked Christopher's cheek. He was the happiest he'd been all week. Christopher climbed upon Jerry's tall back, Using his neck for a ladder and track. Off the two loped through the forest so green, Never imagining they would be seen. They were perceived by an eagle up high, Lazily roaming the vast open sky. This was an eagle with generous heart Who took a like to them right from the start. Just then the eagle saw cause for alarm. There was a lion who might do them harm. Swiftly he swooped and warned Jerry and Chris So they would detour and thus lion miss. Boy and giraffe followed where eagle led, Glad to escape from the lion so dread. Soon they came up to a river quite wide. Christopher rode to the opposite side, Dry as you please upon Jerry's tall neck. He was so happy he gave him a peck. Then they explored a new trail through the wood, Glad of the chance to be feeling so good. Whom did they meet? Jerry's uncle and aunt, Nibbling so gently a sassafras plant. "Jerry, how are you," his relatives cried. "We have been hunting for you far and wide! Now that you're missing both mother and dad Please come and share our commodious pad." "Gladly," said Jerry, "and please meet my friend. Christopher's one upon whom I depend." Christopher said, "I just did what I could; Helping out Jerry has made me feel good." Westward they went to see Jerry's new home. Christopher said, "this is not far to roam." Then he departed and bid them farewell, Saying he'd visit them after a spell. | ||
