Albert the Camel | ||
Christopher climbed to the top of the hill, Looking for dragons to give him a thrill. He did not find any, though he did try. Then a huge camel began to walk by. "Stop," said young Christopher, chasing the beast. "You're going west when you should seek the east." "Why not go west," said the camel, bemused, Though he had never good counsel refused. Christopher said, "In the west you will see Lions and tigers and maybe a bee. It is much safer to go to the east. Come visit my house and we'll have a feast. Albert the camel, for that was his name, Told Chris to hop on 'cause he was quite tame. Christopher climbed up a sassafras tree So he could hop onto Albert with glee. Tightly he held to the fur on the hump So he'd be cushioned and not feel a bump. Slowly they started, and then picked up speed. Christopher thought it was great fun indeed. Suddenly while he was looking aside, "Bang," came a low branch that ended his ride. "Ouch," he exclaimed as he fell to the ground. Albert felt sorry as he turned around. Christopher said, "Let's get on with our cruise. I am okay!it was only a bruise." Albert's tongue licked him to make him feel fine. Soon they came up to a farm with a sign Offering water to all from a pump. Albert said, "Great, I can fill up my hump." All of the cows came to watch the two drink. It was the first camel they saw, I think. They said, "You're diff'rent from folks around here. How did your hump and long neck first appear?" "I am a camel," said Albert with pride. "I'm pleased to say I was born with this hide. Yet I'm a ruminant, friends, just like you. I like sweet grass and I chew my cud, too." Christopher said, "Albert really is nice. I wouldn't trade him for any old price." "Well," said the cows as they looked him all over, "One cannot tell any book by its cover." Albert and Christopher then left the farm, Taking great care they would do it no harm. Christopher rode on Al's back to the town, Causing some people to smile and to frown. "Where did your find that nice camel?" they said. Christopher told them, "He found me instead. Now we are here I know just what to do. We'll pay a visit to our friendly zoo." When they arrived, what a pleasant surprise: There was a camel with pretty blue eyes. "My name is Kim," she explained with a grin. Albert decided her heart he would win. "Wouldn't you like a companion like me?" "Yes," answered Kim, "and the next cage is free." Albert decided to make it his home. Gone were the days he would wander and roam. They were quite ready a fam'ly to try. Christopher wished them a friendly goodbye. | ||
