Brutus the Bear | ||
Christopher climbed to the top of the hill, Looking for dragons to give him a thrill. Nary a one did young Christopher see, But he was stung by a mischievous bee. "Ouch," he exclaimed as he pulled back his arm. "I never did you the least bit of harm." Christopher followed the zigzagging bee Round to the base of a sassafras tree. There he discovered a hive with sweet honey And something else that he thought was quite funny. Next to the hive was a giant black bear, Covered with bees and beginning to swear. Christopher laughed at the curious sight. Then he could see that the bear was in fright. "Quick, follow me," he invited the bear, Leading him down to a lake near his lair. When the bear jumped in the lake with a splash All the bees left him and headed for trash. Christo presented himself to the bear. "My name is Brutus," he said with a flair. "Thank you for leading me down to the lake." Christopher said, "May I offer some cake?" "No thanks," said Brutus, "I pigged out on honey. I would repay you but there is no money." Brutus ascended quite high in a tree, Telling young Christopher what he could see. "There is a fire in the woods over there, Threatening folks at another bear's lair." Christopher said, "You are quite a good scout. Let us run over and put that fire out." Quickly they dashed through the forest and plain. Then, with loud thunder, it started to rain. When they arrived at the fire it was out. All of the bears welcomed them with a shout. Brutus then told them young Christopher's name. "Welcome," they told him, "We're glad that you came." Ten bears were living in Brutus's lair. Christopher eyed them with curious stare. He never saw such a large group of bears, Even when dreaming just after his prayers. "Some boys might fear you and cry with alarm. I know you're friends and you'll do me no harm." Gladly the bears did some tricks to amuse, Clowning around with some wigs and old shoes. Christopher said, "I must go 'cause it's late. I'll be back next week, let's make it a date." When he got home and related this tale Mother and father threw up in a pail. | ||
