Amy the Deer | ||
Christopher climbed to the top of the hill, Looking for dragons to give him a thrill. What did he find but a deer all forlorn, For in her tail was a bothersome thorn. Christopher said, "What may I do to help?" "Pull out the thorn," said the deer with a yelp. Christopher pulled out the thorn in a wink, Then gave the cute little deer a big drink. "Thank you," the deer said while licking his face. "I sure am glad that you came to this place." Christopher said, "Lets both go for a walk. I never spoke to a deer who could talk." "I never spoke to a boy," she replied. "My name is Amy," she said with great pride. Naturally Christopher told her his name, Pleased to discover that Amy was tame. She led the way as they trekked down the trail, Over the mountain and down through the vale. Then she heard sticks on the path give a snap. Amy fell down in a very deep trap. "Help," she exclaimed from the depth of the pit. "Keep calm," said Christopher, "don't have a fit." Up in a tree he espied a long vine. "Great," said young Christopher, "that will be fine." Quickly he cut down the vine with a knife, Ready to help save Miss Amy's sweet life. Throwing one end of the vine in the pit, Christopher said, "You can bite hold of it." Firmly she bit on the end of the rope. Christopher pulled her right up the steep slope. "Thanks," said the deer as she licked his young face. "I must watch out where I step in this place." "Let me be leader," our Christopher said. "Fine" she replied with a nod of her head. Slowly they walked through the woods back to town. Passersby gave them a smile, not a frown. "How nice to see a cute deer on a walk." They were astonished to hear she could talk. They asked her, "How is it you learned to speak?" "Mother just taught me," she said, "I'm no freak. She taught me playing with people is fun. That is, if they do not carry a gun." Soon they arrived at young Christopher's house. Mother was right on the porch with her spouse. "Hi Mom and Dad," he exclaimed with a smile. "Can my pet deer stay with us for a while?" "Certainly, if she would like," they replied. Amy said "Thank you," and went right inside. After a snack and a nice friendly chat They played a game with a ball and a bat. Christopher swatted the ball in the air; Amy then caught it, that surely was fair. Then she recalled what her mother had said: "You must be back home by nightfall for bed." Thanking her hosts for a most pleasant stay She headed home!there was not time to play. Christopher guided her back to the wood, Walking as quickly as ever he could. Now that our Christopher has a new friend It's time for this little poem to end. | ||
