Margaret the Zebra | ||
Christopher climbed to the top of the hill, Looking for dragons to give him a thrill. What did he find but a zebra quite strange, Munching the moss all around the whole range. This zebra had an astonishing hue: Not black and white, she was red, white, and blue. "I'm an American zebra," she said. "That's why I'm colored blue, white, and red." Christopher said, "I sure think you look neat. Tell me, Miss Zebra, just what do you eat?" "Mostly I nibble sweet moss by the hour. Sometimes I chomp on a succulent flower." Christopher asked, with a nod of his head: "How come your colors are blue, white, and red?" "God made me that way," she said with some pride. "How would you like to hop on for a ride?" "Great," answered Christopher, jumping right on. Then in an instant the two were far gone. Christopher asked her, "Say, what is your name?" She answered, "Margaret, and I'm quite tame." Faster and faster she galloped along. Christopher commented, "You are so strong." When they came up to a river quite wide Margaret swam to the opposite side. Christopher, noting how well she could float, Said she had served him as well as a boat. When in an hour they finally slowed down They had arrived in a festive small town. Folks were enjoying the Fourth of July Eating fried chicken and hot apple pie. They were awaiting a gala parade, But it had been for the moment delayed. What they were missing right now was a horse, One that could pull a huge cart 'round the course. Sadly they saw there was no horse around. Who could imagine where one could be found? Margaret asked if they thought she might do. "Seeing," she said, "that I'm red, white, and blue." "Wonderful," shouted the townsfolk as one. Margaret pulled the huge cart with great fun. Hundreds applauded as Margaret rode by. Christopher rode her with head held up high. When the parade finally ended its way, Folks shouted, "Margaret, you saved the day!" Christopher rode her right back to his house, Jumped off and went in as quick as a mouse. "Mother," he said, "I've brought home a new pet!" "Fine," she replied, "Just what kind did you get?" "Only a zebra of red, white, and blue. I brought her home as a present for you." Mother imagined that this was a trick. "Christopher, you have a line that is slick!" When she looked out with incredulous eyes She spotted Margaret. What a surprise! "Please, can we keep her?" young Christopher said. "Sure," said his mother, "now go off to bed." | ||
